you could speak for days about the rising crime (reported) in lafayette, however it is not as a simple issue as some of the posts sugjest. you could speak about law enforcement, the job their doing for better for worse, available jail space, the revolving door at the district attorney's office, the influx of refugees from new orleans, and influx of suspect illegal aliens into our community. of course then one must speak of added resources for the problems lafayette parish / city is having, and who is willing to assist in these problems. also you could speak about the abuse of federal and state assistance programs enabeling a criminal eliment not to pursue legitamate means of income, the lack of value that many persons in the parish place on education ect... obviously it goes on and on... its not just an issue that its either black or white

I think a lot of the problem that people see is result of poor leadership and reactive law enforcement. Resources are limited because no one wants to pay taxes, government already has too much of our money. Our chief of police is part of the problem. The chief should have been a former deputy sheriff or state police officer, Fresh blood. Not part of clique.
I think the sheriff needs to refocus his views on corrections. Parish prison is not supposed to be a long term rehab facility. That is the role of state corrections. Send state inmates to Angola. House for parish needs only. More community service as opposed to jailing young people for long periods in a facility overcrowded with state (long term inmates) would benefit the community. The sheriff should not be placed in a position of trying to make money off of inmates. I think the sheriff, as chief law enforcement official, needs to step up and patrol along with the city. Be highly visible. More marked cars in bad neighborhoods. More innovative enforcement, like precinct stations in "bad areas", black cars for neighborhood night patrol, staggered shifts to put more people on road when needed. Why have 20 units on road at 4:00a.m. when half that will suffice. We have to quit doing things because that is how it was always done.
Use city ordinance to force people to clean up run down areas and stop loitering. That is how crime breeds. Create recreation facilities for young people, not golf courses. Is a better use of funds. Let police get out of their cars and mingle with people; do more than pay lip service to "community policing". WHere are the truant officers ? I see young kids all over town during the day; why aren't they in school ? Arrest their parents for "contributing to the delinquency". Hassle them so they have to go to school. Allow schools to re-introduce discipline again. Make the work environment better for teachers.
That would be my start

I just found out that Lafayette is a "Sanctuary City". Evidently our Sheriff can just refuse to follow the law all on his own. Mayor/president Durel says he does not like it and will ask council for a formal resolution to oppose act although he says it will have no effect Our outgoing Sheriff has endorsed a man (lawyer evidently) caught in Central America soliciting for foreign clients to come to Louisiana to sue local companies (seriously?)for worker compensation claims.I personally think the sheriff has lost his mind or at least lost his senses and forgets who he works for. I trust the good people of Lafayette see through this huckster and send him to ply his trade elsewhere.

Well Mary, the voters elected the huckster. He appears to be the John Kerry of Lafayette politics as everything he says is distorted, inflated etc. He was in Iraq to make money, was not a war hero nor veteran, He was filmed soliciting for clients to sue Louisiana companies in Honduras; And he was a Assistant District Attorney at the time....a slight violation of his oath of office. Where is the new District Attorney on this matter ? And, did you notice the pictures of him with his lovely wife and children (and dog)......seems he had A MISTRESS THE WHOLE TIME. THANKS DOC N FOR ENDORSING AN ADU\LTERER for Sheriff. What a picture of morality he is. And he is not even in office.

I thought that violation of oath is called malfeasance. That is a felony I am told. Why has the new District Attorney not done his job and convened a Grand Jury to review video that I and many others saw and see if the video is unaltered and the incoming sheriff is guilty of malfeasance as well as being a bad husband. Does this make the new District Attorney guilty of malfeasance for failing to do his job ? Is he trying to cover up for an ex-employee ?
