I REMEMBER, THE "y" cafe in Broussard ! I remember jays in cankton, I remember, BROWNS THRIFT CITY, my mom "BILLIE" worked there! WHO remembers the PLACE. At St geneveves church? Or Matts saloon on moss street? Or WEBS NEIGHBORHOOD LOUNGE ON MOSS. WHO REMEMBERS, " NICK LANE" ? I'd like to know? Or poogie motie? Or, omg, COULD GO ON, JOESEPH MCBRIDE, Lafayette city police? The kingfish. The keg! The food and the culture, IT IS WITHIN ALL YOUR LIFE, god bless Cajuns! I was born 1956 ! Seen a lot! 9-22-16 Remembering those times past. Had a schoolmate named Nick Lane - figured he have become a policeman in Lafayette. We used to get Dave & Lous batter-fried french fries after school.

Wow - this is a great board and it's brought back some FANTASTIC memories. I moved away in 1987, and now live in Tennessee. Most of my family remained there, and I always enjoy the visits....AND the food!
I remember when Santa would throw candy from the roof of Brown's Thrift City. I also remember the HUGE statue of an Indian somewhere near the intersection of Bertrand and Eraste Landry Rd. I remember the Rodeo when I shook hands with Festus and when the Globetrotters came to town. I remember Christmas eve midnight masses at Fatima. ALL of the memories y'all have already mentioned! I also remember when the "so-called" tallest man in the world came to town, I think the A&P (<-- is that right?) Grocery store. He left in a volkswagen and the front seat was removed so that he could fit!! Haha, in reality, he was probably only about 6'8"...haha. I remember "Beaver Auction" on TV, and I think Poogie Moutee (not sure how that name is spelled, lol). Polycarp, Happy the Clown, and Happy Fats. I remember driving out to "Stone Road" on Friday nights to party, haha. The Keg, Showtime Drive-In, Twin Drive-In, the Plaza, the Pat, Nona, Center Cinema, the Westwood. I remember when gas was .32 a gallon at Harbor gas station on Johnston. I remember riding my bike in the gulley and into the Vermillion...stupid, huh? So many more, but I'll continue as I have time.. Great post, y'all!!

Nick Lane was indeed a policeman and rose to Chief Criminal Deputy under administration of Sheriff Carlo P Listi. Nick later ran for Sheriff losing to Donald J Breaux, who was Sheriff for 16 years. Nick died after a long battle with cancer quite a few years ago (15 yrs ago). He was married (second wife) \to Anna Baudoin, who owns the unfinished furniture store on Johnston (by bowling alley). You should stop in and see Anna. Puggy Moity is missed simply because he was so colorful and you could hire him to smear your opposition.

How about ambassador, kaliste, and johnston south of the mall, all being two lane roads. A four way stop at ambassador and kaliste when ambassador was called new flanders. Gibsons on johnston Stop and shop bbq poboys were good the old dairy queen, where it is right now by ull, forgot what its called now, but a driveinn when UL was called USL When the Acadiana Mall was field Seemed the weather wasnt as hot and sticky either, but it could just be me When there were two tv or maybe three tv channels, if you were lucky to catch them on the antenna, and all of them went off the air after the news except for friday and saturday nights. I use to wait for the national anthem if I got to stay up late. The Waltons Polycarp No bumper to bumper traffic!!!! No beepers or cell phones When a toyota was $2000.00 brand new, and a chevy truck was $4000.00, loaded. If you go back even farther my grandmother, deceased now, had told me about Jefferson st when it was a gravel rd and they used to take a horse to go downtown, it took all day for the round trip from milton. She told me about the big old oak tree by one of the old courthouses downtown where they used to hang people sentenced to death. There was also a vermilion river ferry that would pick up people and bring them to Chenier Au Tigre in Vermilion Parish for a day on the beach, got some cool old black and white pictures my grandmother and her friends out there These were just things that came into quick memory

I was young back in the late 60's when we lived there but Stop n Shop Bar b que will always be my favorite place to get a real Chipped beef Barbeque sandwich that isn't so wet to make bun wet I also remember the dirty rice as the side. Yum. Why no one Else offers dirty rice as a side is beyond my imagination. Is there another Barbeque restaurant somewhere similar?

TBear it would be great if you could post those pictures. I'd love to see them. I remember Gibsons ... what about Brown's Thrift City where La Promenade (now an empty lot) used to be. I think I bought a radio on lay away there when I was 9 or 10. Samir's was a convenience store and next to it was a Tastee Freeze. Someone reminded me recently that there was an A&W Root Beer Drive In on the southside across from the old Wilson's/Service Merchandise now Courtesy Motors is. Woolco where is Academy is now. When the Plaza with a brand new movie theater. They used to show the Rocky Horror Picture Show there as the midnight movie almost every Friday night. It was crazy ... The first Veron's Meats I remember was near Cal's Western Store. Then they opened the one at the end of Rena before they built that new store. There was also one for years where Q-Zar used to be. One of my brothers worked there in high school. They had the best meat in town. Still do from what I can tell. I'd forgotten about Dave's Top Hat! How about Hopper's where Dominos is at University and Johnston. I remember that old Burger Chef and there was one at Camellia and Johnston for years. I would ride my bike there from home (after going to Woolco) and buy a Super Chef for 50 cents!

When mardi gras was passing thru main street and was all over lafayette (as was the BB crawfish festivle). Now people are hearded into an enclosure which i find disgusting. When DWI'S were virtually nonexistant. When people knew there place and respect ran rampent. No police state to speak of where lafayette had 1 cop. If people got out of line you had a few locals that would stop it or throw you of a glass window. The mirder rate was abou one a year. When schools were segregated , as well as bars. You knew almost everone in Lafayette and if you didn't yould flag them and introduce yourself.

His name was Warren J. “Puggy” Moity. He had a tell all Newspaper called “Louisiana True Scope”. It’s mission was to alert The honest citizens of Louisiana to the antics of the politicians. Puggy would speak from a podium on television to make the voters aware of the danger. Poised on his podium was the ever present Jar of Vaseline “Folks, we gettin da shaft!”

What was the name of the car lot that Jim Olivier used to have the TV commercials about ! The phrase “pontiac point” comes to mind, and I may be wrong.
