was an interesting re-buttal written to assessor Cpmeaux from, get this, another tax assessor. He noted that 39 states use 4.8 yrs as life of computer. Comeaux said our 5 yrs was theft from a business. Miss. & Alabama use 6 years. Point is, apparently our Assessor may not have a clue about what he is talking about. The rebuttal also mentioned 10 year exemption that business (large) get, and the fact that Comeaux overlooked the fact that these business's PAID NOTHING for 10 years. Compare that to the homestead and see who gets the better break ? Also mentioned that it is odd that only 1 assessor of 70 felt the way Comeaux felt. I think Conrad is a flake.

So Z, what you're saying is that our assessor is using the old "bait and switch" tactic on us huh? Or maybe he is dumb as a box of rocks? I really don't know which it is but I ain't happy that my property taxes kep going up and up! Between dunce, duncil and this guy we in deep sheet here ain't we?

What I am saying is our Tax Assessor is obviously not in favor of helping anyone but big business. We see him pushing for millage rollforwards, for valuation reductions for big business, for higher business exemptions. It would seem to me, that were he very observant, he would notice that there are more homeowners than business on the tax roll, and most are feeling the pinch from property taxes. 6 mills for a new courthouse. Yeah.

Any person who understands assessment procedure and the ensuing tax consequences must realize that Comeaux either thinks we are all stupid, want to be taxed more, or just flat do not care. I prefer that he thinks we are stupid. I hope voters send a message this tax election and next year as well. It is time to rid ourselves of all of the parish wide officials; Assessor, Clerk of Court, President, Sheriff, and let's not forget the parish council members !!! If you want our money, justify it !!

He thinks we are all stupid AND he just doesn't care. He has the same mentality about 1010 Lafayette St. as the Clerk across the street, it is his Kingdom!
They all need to go! (Maybe we can put that on a bumper sticker for the elections next year?)

Ever wonder why a tax assessor should make 125,000.00 a year. That is where your road money is making a good ride.

And it is in an Excursion, the biggest gas hog on the road next to the Hummer. Now here is a Republican who knows how to conserve the tax dollars whilst raising our taxes through ever higher assessments.

I would like to know the type of vehicle the Assessor, and for that matter, all elected officials drove before taking office. If he drove a large truck for example, I would not be too upset. If he drove some little economy car, and is now in an Excursion, I would be perturbed. I notice a lot of Tahoe, Suburban type vehicles at the spots where elected officials park, and I know they use the vehicles for personal trips because I have seen them, and I am paying for their gasoline when I can barely afford mine. I resent this abuse. If you drove a Cadillac or Lincoln, I would say that they are used to that , but don't go from a Suzuki to a Tahoe and expect me to think that is okay.

For those who browse this column and are interested, the La House of representatives voted in support of a $23,000+ raise for our Clerk of Court today(this on top of an annual raise for the last 10 years), and yesterday voted for a $25,000+ raise for our wonderful Parish Assessor. Just when the governor was catching up to them.
It just keeps on getting better.

Just curious; do you suppose that the staff (people who actually work) receive a comparable % raise. I doubt it.

Please note that the Tax Assessor is holding hearings to raise his millage rate WITHOUT a vote of the people of Lafayette Parish. I guess that he uses the money to pay for more "public service " announcements like I have been seeing on KLFY News because the staff is not getting raises.
How is it that all the republicans are now "tax and spend" ? That was once the realm of Democrat politicians; now our president, clerk, assessor all are free spenders of public monies and seem to hold taxpayers in contempt. Time for a new breed of old style republicans.

I couldn't agree more, Ronnie...Comeaux is another one who has no respect for his staff in paying them what they deserve - NOT EVEN a cost of living raise ! How inhumane ! He knew ZERO when he got into office & like his bud, the clerk, booted years of experience out the door; and obviously, hasn't learned much, esp, in the area of human relations & misuse of monies. He is like the old cartoon character whose nose got longer & longer because of lying. Bet he'll be found in violation of some ethic standards among other things !

I have noticed the bold ad's in the Advertiser regarding millage adjustments. It would seem that all of the taxing bodies are taking advantage of inflation of values on homes. How, for example does the Sheriff justify an increase in millage rates when he has $9 million in surplus ? The Clerk raises fees with a $7 million dollar surplus. Our tax assessor urges Parish to roll up millages at our expense. This is how we vote on a 10 mill tax for schools, and a few years later the millage rate is 17 mills. This is an increase without voter approval. Where is the Advertiser, guardian of the people ? Remember, a rolled back millage brings back more money to taxing body because values are higher. A higher rate on a higher value is theft as far as I am concerned.
A large surplus in government is NEVER good because that surplus is proof that we are being overcharged, sort of like gas prices and profits.

I read the guest editorial regarding "tax rollforwards'by a Mr Spikes. I must agree with his perception of the situation. It is a THEFT of money from the taxpayers, plain and simple.
How do these scoundrels like Conrad Comeaux and Mike Michot get elected and stay in office. Can they have that many friends, or are we really that ignorant ?

We are, in fact ignorant.
Look at our current roster of officials in Lafayette;Durel, Neustrom, Comeaux,Perret,Harson,Michot. With the exception of Harson, that bunch seem to think we work for them. Their arrogance towards the taxpaying people who support and pay them (and pay them well) is reason enough to dismiss them from public service.
We deserve the higher taxes and the inept politicians who steal our money.

"We deserve the higher taxes and the inept politicians who steal our money. "
Oh, to the contrary. The politicians appear to be very skilled at what they are doing!
Rolling property taxes forward, high fees at the Court house, out of sight raises for elected officials, the list goes on and on.......

Why is our (Lafayette Parish) assessor in Baton Rouge, fighting an increase in the homestead exemption when all the other assessors are pushing for it? If no increase in the exemption is fair, why not do the same for business - no exemption increases?
Better yet, let us abolish all tax exemptions, require the taxing bodies (including needlenose comeaux) to roll back millage and never allow "rollforwards" without a vote of the taxpaying public. I bet the business people would cry then.
Comeaux, get out of LABI's pocket.
