Does anyone out there realize that the only local ambulance service has been granted an exclusive franchise by LCG to operate in the parish? The ambulance company is a privately owned for profit corporation. It is not a public or even a semi-public company. Their rates are not regulated by any public authority. The local for profit company does a great job but why does not our local government provide ambulance service as a basic public service such as fire protection or police protection? The men and women of the City of Lafayette Fire Department would be well suited to such a task. In most cities, the fire department is responsible for and provides the service, why not here? Imagine if there were a very small property tax to support the additional public service. The Fire Stations are already built, the fire fighters could receive additional medical training, the communications system is in place, just purchase the actual rolling stock and everyone could have ambulance service for far less than is paid now.

Laugh out Loud, duck camp indeed.
It seems that Percy has a valid point. Perhaps additional staff may have to be hired for the fire department, but in most cities, the government, through the fire department, provides the service. I have always wondered why it is not done here. The local provider must be quite the political player to have gotten and maintained such a plum deal.

Maybe Durel could poll the people of Lafayette and see if we would prefer a service provided by our fireman rather than what we currently have. Seems like Acadian just buys out their competition. For all of there "free trade" b s, seems as though they prefer monopoly.

Thats why when you get the ambulance bill its $43.00 for them using two pair of rubber gloves. Thats why we pay such high medical insurance. The same with two tylenol in the hospital, i thinks its what $25.00.
I am really glad I work for an employer who supplies my insurance, I would have a hard time without it to buy my own insurance.
Give me a break.

I have a question - How does Acadian escape payment of franchise fee? They have an exclusive franchise granted by the parish.

Ronnie, I think you just gave "mr tax and spend as much of our money as fast as he can durel" another way to generate more money(from us the taxpayers or ambulance users) for his government's use. Sheesh I can see his eyes rolling around in his head as we speak. Ole dee is probably calling 1 of his favorite duncilmen right now to alert them that a new tax is on the way. I'm sure he can count on the usual sycophants to carry his water.

You don't seriously think someone has the audacity to approach Acadian and tell them they have to operate like the rest of the world. I need to check campaign finance and see how much was given to Durel by Acadian, but I am sure he is supporter of Acadian.

Well abbd, I was wrong. It appears Mr Z donated to Glenn Weber, not Durel. Maybe he will try and enforce franchise fee on Acadian. Those reports make interesting reading. I noticed several names on both lists (Weber & Durel).

www.ethics.state.la.us/cgi-bin/la98/forms/ this link will name all our local and state politicians and who contributed to them. There is really some interesting information on that link. I wonder why our local news media doesn't publish this information.

Doesn’t AA have a Political Action Committee? The committee ( as well as owners and principals) is/are always making contributions to candidates but I can’t seem to find a report on the committee?
I thought Political Action Committees were required to file reports like the candidates themselves?
And as to taxes, I have to pay Red's and Sam's a "sales" tax on my membership, why not Acadian?
