IF THE CITY WAS REALLY INTERESTED IN CUTTING GAS ENERGY COSTS, WHY NOT PUT NON-MAJOR INTERSECTIONS ON THE CAUTION AND STOP LIGHT CYCLE. THIS BETWEEN ELEVEN PM AND SIX IN AM. CAUTION LIGHT ON MAIN DRAG, AND RED FLASHING STOP LIGHT ON INTERSECTING STREET. HAVING TO STOP AT ALL THE SMALLER INTERSECTIONS AND WAIT 2-3 MINUTES AT 3:00 IN THE MORNING IS RETICULES. ALSO LETS CUT THE TIME OF MAIN DRAG LIGHTS AND INCREASE THE GREEN LIGHT TIME ON INTERSECTING STREETS, SO MORE THAN 2- 4 CARS CAN GET THRU ON THE GREEN LIGHT. TOO MUCH TIME AND GAS WASTED AT RED LIGHTS.

The city-parish is not even slightly interested in saving fuel. I too have sat at lights in the early hours (I work shifts and am often up late) wondering why we are so dumb. Stop, look both ways, and proceed.
Why does the city insist on buying Ford Crowns for LPD w/V-8 motors when smaller more efficient vehicles are available ? Why do our elected officials mostly drive SUV's ? Because they do not pay for the fuel, we do.
A no left turn ban on all streets with no turning lane would help and likely reduce wrecks. And I suppose no engineers in Lafayette went to class the day that overpasses were discussed either.

Speaking of redlights. Head over to the newspapers letters to the editor and be sure to read Vic Bell's entry.

I was watching some of those videos that the Advertiser shows on their site. Cars just driving through lights like the light is not even there - even past cars stopped at light !
If this is not concrete evidence that the cameras are not a deterrent in any way shape or form, and these cameras are yet another scheme to fleece citizens under the guise of "good government", what proof does one need ?
And I even heard some bureaucrat saying the reduced number of citations was "proof" that the speed cameras were working. What an idiot ! People are taught to watch for a white van on the side of the road and they slow down till they are past the van. You can teach a dog that type of Pavlovian response.

This past weekend I drove down K Saloom @ambassador Caffery and this young city police officer was wandering back and forth for hours between the cars, presumably looking for seat belt violators or expired inspection stickers. I am truly amazed that he was not run over because he just wandered in and out of traffic. Is this Chief Craft's solution for the crime wave in Lafayette? How about the danger to that young man for such nonsense ? His dedication could be put to better use to be sure.

I have seen no mention anywhere locally, but Jefferson Parish has puled the plug on the traffic cameras.
It seems that the newspaper there (yes, some communities have real newspapers) demanded to know from Redflex how their money was divvied up and evidently some political bigwigs were getting a piece of the goose that laid the golden egg.
Of course that could not happen in Lafayette although I remember the son of Charlie Buckels pushed the cameras and got the council to go for it. Buckels father is or was the local chairperson for the Republican party and has ties to president Durel.

I think as a form of civil disobedience that all citizens should refuse to pay Redflex. Who was the guy with hundreds of tickets that will not pay per the Advertiser ? How dare the council bilk all that money from us and send it out of state!
