Grew up on N. Buchanan across from the railroad tracks. Would sit with my Papa on his lap in his rocking chair (which I still have) and count the train cars. The small two bedroom house he had survived many hurricanes, including one that a gas station next to Louviere's store on Mudd Ave posted a sign: Blow Betsy, Blow! And it was blown to pieces.
Papa would make my coffee milk and the grown ups would watch Passe Patout on tv. Would hear the chanky chank of "A Lon Donce Colinda" and other Cajun music which at the time I didn't appreciate. Wilfred Breaux had a small grocery store near E Simcoe and the Evangeline Thruway-- called DD Breaux's. Papa would walk there to shoot the breeze with the men and we would follow hoping to score some candy. St Genevieve Catholic Church was close by. Father Sigura said Mass in Latin, so I never got much out of Mass. But was made to go into the confessional to confess all my sins. I stayed too long once trying to pretend I was really confessing all the sins my mother thought I should, but when I exited she asked why I stayed in the confessional so long after the Priest turned off the red light. Went to Catecism every Saturday, but converted to Baptist after going to Vacation Bible School where they gave us popsicles.
My first phone number was CE 40303. Later, we had a party line.
Girard Park was a fun place to hang out and we went fishing at Beaver Park. I remember good food at a small snowball stand owned by Verna Benoit on N Sterling and Bellot? I would give anything to have her recipe for chilimixes. Dale's Drive In had great hamburgers as did The Red Dog Saloon near my dorm at USL. Also, The Brass Rail had sausages cut up with mustard and crackers. Mother's Mantle was a place to play pool and The Keg was our college hang out (still smell the stale smell of spilled beer). After Dark on Johnson St. was our dancing hook up bar which later became an awesome restaurant called Ireland's serving little pueces of filet mignon and biscuits.
On Sundays, Mama would pick up food at Langlanais to bring home; Great Rice Dressing. It was near where Veron's was. The Blair House was a good place to eat. My first job as a hostess was at The Tiffin Inn Pancake House. Regulars would come in to the hotel to stay and play at the Evangeline Downs Race Track. In the summers, we would pay to go swimming at The Polka Dot Inn.
