A related word to criticize is to examine.
One need not sit by and watch our elected leaders run amuck. They all work for me and I have a right a duty and an obligation to be critical or to examine their behavior. All assessments need not be construed as bad. As to the 4th estate, we have no reporters in Lafayette, they simply regurgitate press releases handed to them by whomever.
Look at the airport commission mess. After a group of citizens did all of the research ( the job of an investigative reporter ) the paper jumped on the story with both feet.

I have lots of nice things to say about almost everything, however, there is not much point in talking about change or improvement in things that are good already. Do you really want to hear about the courteous drivers one encounters every day ? Do you want to hear about how nice a deputy clerk was or how helpful someone was in a judge's office, or the deputy sheriff who stopped and helped me the other day ? Of course not.
We all post because we would like to see a change for the better, or at least our perception of better governmental service as we want it. It is my fondest desire that elected officials read these posts and consider how they might apply to them. Are you saying that you do not want Mr Durel (a very nice guy) to uphold his platform that he ran on? Are you suggesting that we do not try and hold these people accountable ? That you do not want better performance for the money from parish government ? That you like being used as a money fountain by various elected officials ?
The simple fact is that many people surround themselves by "yes" men (or women) and never hear that perhaps they are not performing as they should. If no one points this out, then how is one to improve? I will look forward to your posts that will be a positive re-enforcement of our local and state government affairs.
You may for example be critical of Denise Skinner for what she is doing. I admire the fact that she is at least quesioning the status quo. More of us should do the same. The government should not be run in a secretive fashion, and the local news media has an obligation to make sure this does not happen. One only need look at New Orleans; the press is constantly pointing out government missdeeds, as do the local television stations. That is reporting. Wouldn't you want the same here. Unless you are a politician (of course you are not) you should want to be informed. What you see as a negative is in fact a positive.

Sad what passes for news in our daily paper. Looks more like fluff to me. The front page is more human interest garbage than real news. How many real news articles are printed daily? Count them for yourself it sure amazed me.

I have something good to say. Redlight camera Charlie lost, and Bob Odom dropped out of the election. Now those are really nice things. Just my opinion, I'm sure you feel differently.

I would like to know what the problem was with the Lafayette Clerks office with getting the Lafayette returns in. I sat in front of the tv until what 11:00 pm before we saw some. We knew who the governor was before our local councilmen. It use to be way faster with the old machines. I thought the computerized machines were supposed to be faster.

I think our Clerk wanted to be sure he won first. Actually, returns were very slow last election. Came in after 11:00 that night. Must be all that new technology our clerk invested in. Sorry twentyplus, there I go with a negative again. What is your surmise of the tardiness in election reporting in Lafayette Parish ? Why are we slower than Iberia, Acadia, St Martin, St MAry, and St Landry ? Is that our new software investment or is it the staff or is it something else? The elections used to be reported on a very rapid basis only 8 years ago, but of course, things were not so sophisticated as now. Not possible that the office is not managed properly is it ?
