hey did you know it cost your child a lot of extra money to get into the extra activities the schools sponsor. one of my children wanted to play soccer, the school wanted $350.00 or a sponsor to pay. well so much for keeping them off the streets and teaching them sportsmanship. they want to know why kids get into trouble, parents cant afford to put up that kind of money.

That is ashame, thats what we pay taxes for. Instead of the automated call system they need to put the money in the school athletic programs for children.
Not to mention thats why my child goes to a public shcool because I cant afford a private school. Charging money like that the Lafayette school board might as well be a private school.

the problem with the whole thing is the school has funds for that- football i could see- where does a school spend 350 per student for soccor? you know the balls arnt new, the stundent has to pay for shin gaurds and shoes, - and the uniforms arnt new every year- so whats all the money for or who?

After teaching in the Parish School System for TOO many years, I can tell you that in my opinion, there is way too much money spent on new programs which arer then replaced by newer programs next year which are replaced by newer programs ad naseum. Teachers are not allowed to teach, but we have to take the blame for EVERYTHING. There is no discipline in the classrooms because the teachers are not allowed to enforce policies. Too often parents show up at school too anxious to blame some one else for their childs problem. That is why I no longer work for the LPSB!

I applaud you, the teacher, for stating what is true and do agree with you that its not the teachers fault, but the LPSB for not managing themselves correctly.
I will also say I had several teachers of the LPSB in my family who have long since retired, so long ago they paid them with IOUs because they didnt have the money for payroll.
And those teachers will tell you that if someone misbehaved they were punished severely, even paddled. Even when I went to school you sure didn't want the principle calling your parents, because you knew what was coming when you got home.
So the parents, who can't control their own child, have to look for blame in other areas, because they dont want to look like bad parents.

parochial schools do a better job, on a lot less money than public school. and the teachers work for a lot less, so money obviously is not the core issue. There was a time that people taught because they loved the profession.....why did society take that love away ?

how does everyone feel about requiring a student athlete to maintain a "C" average to participate?
I believe that should be required by our La Dept of Education, but why should they focus on matters of education? I do not even see why we have a Dept of Education, BESE Board etc. Seems like a lot of political nonsense to me.

In my opinion they should at least maintain a C average because it only makes sense. Thats where some of our educators/coaches need to focus on math, history, etc, for the student instead of sports and consider the child's welfare and future. They should not worry about the named school making the playoffs.
And please note there are plenty of good teachers, coaches, schools, etc, but there are a few that could care less about the child getting a good education as long as he or she excels in sports.

My siblings and I had the opportunity to attend both private and public schools. I have already decided that there is no school in the Lafayette parish public school system that is good enough for my kids to attend.
My little sister attended Lafayette High School last year for a month. She said that drug use is a common occurrence on the campus! Are you kidding me? Where are the drug sniffing dogs?
Speaking of Lafayette High, wasn't one of their coaches recently arrested in Iowa for soliciting a minor over the internet? *shakes head*
