I saw this on tv3 last night:
Anyone who travels onLafayette's Verot School Road knows what a headache traffic there can be. In an open letter published today the Acadian Home Builders association hopes governor Blanco will seek immediate funding to widen the crowded state highway.
They say Verot School Road is inadequate to handle its everyday traffic and they hope state lawmakers will designate it as a hurricane evacuation route. Their proposal is ambitious.
They propose widening Verot to a four-lane street all the way from highway 90 in Lafayette parish to highway 14 in Vermilion parish, which is roughly eight miles.
The Home Builders Association has noted the tremendous traffic on the road and they say for many people in Acadiana it's the only way out.
They're also hoping designating Verot School Road as an evacuation route will pump state and federal money into the area to expand and improve the road.
The Home Builders Association president tells me he expects builders to construct about three thousand new homes in the area over the next few years. He says that will only add to the problems many drivers face when they hit the road.
You would think the Home Builders Association would have thought of that before they built all the houses they have now. But of course now they are scared because of the traffice problem no one is going to buy their houses in that area.
